When many vacationers are ready to travel to Europe, they tend to focus on the western portion of the continent. Of course, Madrid, Paris, and London are all gorgeous cities, but Eastern Europe is not exactly lacking in the lovely city department either. Somehow, though, the region is forgotten by those on holiday and their travel agents. Budapest is not only one of Hungary’s loveliest cities, it is also the capital of the country. The town is situated along the Danube River, and Castle Hill looks out upon its waters. This is the historic center of the city, and across the Danube is found the Pest section of Budapest. Here, modernization has taken hold over the last 100 years and it is now a hotspot for the cosmopolitan bunch. Pest is where visitors will find pubs, cafes, nightclubs, and restaurants.
Istanbul, Turkey is quite the eclectic city. Its history combines with an ever-growing appreciation for the fine arts to create a unique experience for travelers. The Blue Mosque and Hagia Sophia provide a glimpse into the city’s religious past, and the Saint Sophia Museum displays artifacts that span a number of years. Kiev, Ukraine is another city that must be visited by guests looking for historic museums. Here sits the Chernobyl Museum, a testament to the infamous nuclear disaster. Also found in Kiev is the Pecherska Lavra monastery, a building complete with catacombs that house mummified monks from centuries past.
Poland has certainly born witness to historic events, especially considering its role in World War II. Travelers are especially attracted to Krakow, a city that enjoys some of the most remarkable Gothic and Renaissance architecture on Earth. Its structures survived the war remarkably well, and a visit during the Christmas season is stunning. The shops are brightly lit beneath a sparkling drape of snow. Kotor is a port city in Montenegro that offers its annual summer carnival during the warm months, a party that involves the merrymaking of thousands of people who fill the streets.
It is likely that all of these cities in Eastern Europe sound familiar. That is because they are impressive and historic, but they do not receive the attention of the rich and famous like the Mediterranean towns do with their resorts.
